In order to come out a big idea for a table, we need to use the 'white hat'.
I have searched over the internet and tried to get as much of information as I can, and I would like to share it.
So, the first thing We should know clearly is the differences of a table and a desk.
Table is a piece of furniture with a flat top, and one or more legs,
providing a level surface for eating, writing or working.
Desk is also a piece of furniture, with a flat top or sloping surface and typically with drawers,
at which one can read, write or working.
In a conclusion, table consist of one flat top while desk can have a sloping surface.
Besides, desk consist of drawers but table doesn't. However, nowadays some tables also consist of drawers.
Because I'd choose table as my subject, so I will more focus on the table.
Table has a long history, it exist since ancient world but less frequently found until the sixteenth century, when decorative and stylistically distinctive furniture become very important.

1)Forms. types and purposes
There are two main type of table, which is fixed or mechanical. A fixed table means that it does not move, expand or reduce in size.
A mechanical table is which it can be movable, fold or expand, this give the table more flexibility.
However, under this two main type, there are plenty forms of table, different forms of table are build for different purposes.
The list below is the most common forms of table:
a)Dining table - For formal dining, but also can be use for writing, read and other non-technical
purposes.
b)Bedside table - A small table (some consist drawers)which put beside the bed, for putting the lamb
and other personal things like wallet and hand phone.
c)Coffee table - For people to put things when they're sitting on the sofa in the living room.
d)Drafting table - For technical drawing purpose.
e)Workbenches - For people who is doing works in a standing pose, normally for industrial purpose.
f)Poker table - For playing poker.
g)Ping pong table - For playing ping pong
h)Working/ office table - For doing work like writing or for study purposes.

2)Shapes
The basic shape of a table is a square, however, due to the costumer's need, different shapes have being used. Most common table's shape that you can found in the market are rectangular, square, round and oval. Beside of that, some less common shapes are L shape, U shape and organic shape.
One of the reason why more shape are used is to fit more people, for example, a square table can fit 4 people and a rectangular table can fit 6 people. Besides, shape also used for the aesthetic purpose, different kind of shape can give different kind of look and feel.

3) Materials
In the past, materials for making a table are mostly woods.Wood has two main categories, which are softwood and hardwood. The dominant feature separating "hardwoods" from softwoods is the presence of pores, or vessels. However, Hardwood is not necessary harder than softwood, for example Balsa is a kind of hardwood but it is softer than softwood. More examples of hardwood are Redwood, Rosewood, Kingwood, Basswood, Oak, Teak, Mahogony and many more. Examples of softwood are Cedar, Cedrus, Fir, Juniper and Pine. From early twentieth century until today, lots of new material have been invented. materials like glass, metal, plastic, chrome, laminate and chipboard. Different materials have been used according to the costumer's need and to fit the interior design.

4) Style and Design
In the sixteenth century, decoration become very important, stylish furniture was ornately carved and included turnings made on foot-pedal lathes. Through the centuries until today, the style keep changing, and nowadays, most of the furniture including the table is made in clean line and use the concept of minimalist. However, the old school style is still being use according to particular purposes. Recently, some of table has been design with the concept of 3R - recycle, reuse and reduce. Besides, the table legs nowadays are not necessary in the form of table, it can be a coffee cup, block or other form and shape.
